The First Rule of Vastu for Home: South-West Heavy, North-East Light

If you remember nothing else about Vastu, remember this one rule: South-West heavy, North-East light.
The South-West direction governs stability, accumulation, authority and earth element. It should be loaded with heavier furniture, the master bedroom, storage, important documents. The North-East governs flow, clarity, water element and clean inputs. It should be open, lighter, with minimal clutter — ideally pooja or meditation, a clean glass of water, refreshing colours.
Why it works
The principle is not mystical — it mirrors how energy and human attention flow through a space. Heavy mass anchors. Light openness invites movement. When this is reversed (heavy NE, light SW) people commonly report restlessness, sleep disturbance, money slipping out, and decision fatigue.
Easy diagnostics
- Walk into your home with a compass. Identify NE and SW.
- Photograph both corners. Are they balanced according to the rule?
- If reversed, plan a sequence — heaviest items first, decorative items last.
This single rebalance solves a remarkable proportion of cases before a deeper Vastu audit is even needed.
